Know Thyself

Have you ever had that unsettling feeling that you have been sailing through life without a compass?

Do you feel there is more to your existence than you are experiencing now?

Are you living your life's purpose?

These are timeless questions and a clue to their answers can be found at the Temple of Delphi in Greece. Amongst the ancient ruins of this Goddess-based civilization is an ancient Greek inscription prescribing to “Know Thyself.”

This Thursday Greg will be teaching his AWE inspiring online workshop titled where he guides you deep into the Temple of your own Delphi Oracle to discover that virtuous ambition planted inside your heart, the one that navigates you on the path to a fulfilling existence. It is only a matter of being aware what it is and creating a plan to see it blossom in the world.

Greg has taught this technique to over a thousand students. It works!

Start living a life long adventure that will inspire you to rise from your bed in the morning ready to greet the new day, everyday.

LEARNING OUTCOME

  • A. Realize how the soul of your life is aligned with your heart.
  • B. Design an emblem that represents this newfound knowledge.
  • C. Create a vision board that will align your heart virtue with a plan to share it with the world.

March 9th & 10th in Encino, CA
April 13th & 14th Santa Fe, NM

This two day workshop is for those who have taken the
ART OF BOTANICAL PERFUME
class live or online course

DAY ONE : Chord Building A chord or accord in perfume is a term borrowed from music referring to constructing a synergy of notes that will be added to your perfume to create more complexity. In this day long workshop you will learn the notes and essences associated with eight fragrance families, how they relate to each other and how to make them more complex. These are the eight fragrance families we will focus on:
  • Green
  • Floral
  • Earth
  • Wood
  • Spice
  • Gourmand
  • Citrus
  • Fruit
By the end of the day you will have created a few chords that will be used on Day Two when we construct a perfume within a specific class.

DAY TWO : Perfume Types Perfumes are categorized into categories or types, which are also referred to as classes. This organizational system is based on the overall, universal scent impression. We will learn about these types, the notes that go into their formulation and construct one or more, depending on our time.
  • Chypre
  • Oriental
  • Fougère (meaning fern in French)
  • Floral
  • Green
  • Leather
All supplies & tools are included with the purchase of this class. Please bring a notebook for jotting down your formulas. By the end of the each day you will have gained new insights to add complexity to your botanical perfume formulas and knowledge to continue working with new skill sets.

Seating is limited, thus I recommend enrolling ASAP to grab your seat

Study, Learn, Evolve, Repeat

This Sunday, April 9th, I will be teaching what appears to be the very last Art of Botanical Perfume live class at the "current" perfumery. It won't be the last live class I teach, but my lease in the Whizin Market Hall is up on May 5th, thus it will likely be the last live class I do in this exact location...at least as of this sacred moment.

The online Art of Botanical Perfume course is available 24/7 and more live and online classes are on their way. What this also means, if you haven't put the pieces together yet, is that the perfumery as we know it in this incarnation will cease to exist. I won't say more at this point since things are in a fluid state, however, if you've been meaning to take a class or visit the space, tick tock.

Alchemy and Medicine of the Soul

Alchemy & the Medicine of the Soul
The Wounded Healer, A Journey Through the Alchemical Stages & the Sacred Union
A Workshop with Cathy Skipper & Dr Florian Birkmayer MD

for the world’s sake, finding our song and singing it.”
~ Miriam Greenspan, Healing Through the Dark Emotions

I am delighted to host a spectacular series of events which includes a weekend workshop with two very heartfelt souls and leaders in the transformative power of aromatic plants, essential oils and hydrosols. Cathy Skipper and Dr Florian Birkmayer bring together a knowledge- and skill-set that encompasses French medical aromatherapy, holistic psychiatry, spiritual alchemy and intuitive plant communication.

The pleasure of meeting Florian and Cathy was akin to that feeling when we discover kindred souls, it took place at the first Beyond Aromatics conference in Seattle Washington, at the time Greg and I were rooming next to Florian and the two had not gotten together as a couple. At the conference, both Cathy and Florian presented topics that were perfectly paired for their profound approach to working with plants, essential oils and psychology—which would set the stage for this profound workshop. Florians approach has since evolved further by working closely with Cathy — whose own expertise as a herbalist, aromatic medicine practitioner and workshop leader is the product of decades of experience and study.

Cathy and Florian share their unique insight into the healing potency of essential oils by bringing to bear teachings distilled from spiritual alchemy, Jungian psychology, and their own unfolding healing journey... aromatically infused with plant wisdom from both the blue plateaus of Provence and the sagebrush deserts of New Mexico.

Florian will show how the Jungian understanding of alchemy is a revealing model for aromatic soul medicine, elucidated by his experience of using essential oils to treat people with post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues in his work as a psychiatrist. Cathy will draw from her long experience of French clinical aromatherapy, plant communication and kinesiology. Both Cathy and Florian have a personal and professional background in ‘healing the healer’ — a central theme of the workshop.

The workshop is suitable for aromatherapists, herbalists, bodyworkers and psychotherapists, and all those working in the healing arts wishing to deepen their relationship with aromatic plants as well as their own healing journey. Join us for a memorable weekend of learning, sharing and aromatic inner healing... but please don’t delay in booking your place, as numbers are limited!

COURSE COMPONENTS

• Distillation with Cooper Alembic of California Native Plant Flora.
• The seven alchemical stages and their relationship to distinct phases within the cycle of growth and healing.
• Identifying the different emotional/energetic states that arise within each alchemical stage and the essential oils that can help to transform them.
• Exercises and experiential work to deepen our understanding of each alchemical stage and the psycho-therapeutic actions of specific essential oils.
• Looking at ways this work can be used with clients in an aromatherapy or psychotherapy practice.

This workshop is intended to:

Help participants develop a deeper and more personal, intuitive relationship to aromatic plants and essential oils.
Offer participants a model of transformation that can be used to assist them on their own healing journeys and those of their friends, family and clients.
Highlight the importance of soul healing in achieving a state of inner harmony, vitality and optimum health.

Cathy Skipper
Workshop Co-Facilitator

English by birth, Cathy Skipper spent her adult life in rural France, where she farmed, trained and worked as a herbalist and aromatherapist, and taught practical herbalism, botany and aromatherapy at the L’Ecole Lyonnaise de Plantes Medicinales in Lyon. She participated for four years in an approach to energetic healing called Life Cell, under French Kinesiologist Caroline Gupta. Her medicinal plant education in France included a two-year course with Claude Lefebvre in Plant Communication. She emigrated from France in 2015 to live and work in New Mexico with her partner, Florian Birkmayer.

Cathy’s work involves building bridges between aromatic medicine and herbalism as well as recognizing the importance of healing the healer and reconnecting with nature. In her teaching she marries theory, practical work and energetics with the intention of helping students develop an intuitive relationship between themselves, the plant/essential oil and the patient, as a poweful impetus for healing.

Cathy’s work with Florian has a core vibration with the work of Carl Jung, the psyche, aromatic molecules, and the mind. She is co-author with Patrice de Bonneval of Aromatic Medicine.

For more info about Cathy follow this link to her blog and this post which delves deeper into this workshop we are presenting.

Dr Florian Birkmayer MD
Workshop Co-Facilitator

Florian Birkmayer is a Wounded Healer and the co-developer with Cathy Skipper of AromaGnosis, which synthesizes Jungian depth psychology and aromatherapy. A holistic psychiatrist, he has an extensive background in trauma and addiction as well as Equine-Assisted Therapy. A bridge-builder between different medical worlds, Florian works closely and respectfully with a wide range of healers.

Florian received his B.A. from Princeton University and his M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York. He completed his psychiatry residency at the University of New Mexico. Webinar for the Art of Botanical Perfume Online Course

After a week of editing Greg and I have finished the webinar for the Art of Botanical Perfume Online Course and uploaded it to YouTube here.

We are having some massive team and technical challenges getting all the videos finalized. The content for Module 1 is live with the video forthcoming. Intending Module 2 will be arriving soon. I had no idea that there would be so many challenging with having videos made. Might just be letting go of professionalism and perfection, and learning that getting a great, reliable team when embarking on a project of this scale is so important.

Art of Botanical Perfume Online Course

I created a special essence kit for the course, which is mentioned in the video with a link at the course page. The labels, stickers, folded booklet etc. have been all custom designed and are being printed as I type. Thus, the kits will be sent out next week which is in plenty of time before the students will need them for the debut of Module 5: Olfactory Awareness in mid April.

Palette Exploration: Chypre Perfumes

Tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the perfumery we are going to delve into the botanical essences used to create a Chypre style perfume. This fragrance classification was introduced in the 19th century but made popular in 1917 by François Coty with the release of Coty's ‘Chypre’ and Guerlain with . The French word comes from Cyprus in the Mediterranean

At the heart of the chypre structure is the contrast between the sweet, fresh notes of an unripe Italian citrus called bergamot and the rich, heavy note of oakmoss. These two pivotal ingredients are built upon with woody, floral and animalic notes.

The two most typical chypre fragrances in my line are GreenWitch and Gracing the Dawn.

October 29, 6:30 - 8:30; Chypre Perfumes
November 5, 6:30 - 8:30; Oriental Perfumes

If you choose to attend please purchase your seat in advance to be guaranteed a space.

Botanical Perfume in New York City!

In a few weeks I'll be off to NYC to teach The Art of Botanical Perfume class at the NY Institute of Aromatherapy. The class filled up really quick and is sold out. The founder of the school, Amy Galper (picture below), has generously set up a secondary evening at this link.

I am so extremely excited about heading to NYC! I moved there in the 80's right out of art school and thus feel like its a second home. My mentor, friend and aromatherapy teacher Jade Shutes will be there to film it so we can use the footage to promote the upcoming online course.

Look forward to seeing those of you in the NY at one of these two events. Please share and tell you friends. Watch my instagram feed for photos.

Make Your Own Solid Perfume

This Sunday afternoon I will be teaching an introductory class on how to make your very own solid perfume. We will be going into the fundamentals along with how to make infusions and adding other elements like floral waxes.

The Student and the Teacher

In the mid eighties on the day of graduation from Otis in downtown Los Angeles, the head of the Communications Arts Dept. Sheila Levrant De Bretteville, invited me to return to Otis as a teacher. I've been teaching ever since!

This Sunday I will once again resume the mantle of teaching with the debut of my first formal class at the perfumery which opens the door to regular workshops and an upcoming online series. I started teaching aromatherapy classes in 1996 followed by natural perfume while continuing to teach illustration, eventually choosing to focus all my skill sets into aromatics.

At the moment there are two classes scheduled titled The Artistry of Botanical Perfume, Day Long Intensive, the first on Sunday followed by a second on August 23rd. Returning students will have the fortune to retake classes at a reduced rate. The intention is to have the online classes ready for early Autumn.

"It is the supreme art of the  teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
                                                                                                      ~ Albert Einstein

As experienced in the Beyond Aromatics presentation at Bastyr University last September, my approach to botanical perfume focuses on intuition and artistry. In order to reach supreme creativity and an individual, authentic way of expression a circular, right brain type of learning is needed. This is what I bring to the world of botanical perfume education.

More details coming soon. Right now I am in the thick of deciding which camera, lenses and mic, etc. to purchase.

I leave you with another image from my graduation day back in May of 1985 at MacArthur Park in downtown LA. This photo is of Ray Eames with her camera shooting Andrew as we all headed to a celebratory dinner. Both the opening image and this one were taken by Andrew Neuhart.

Scents contain mysteries and revelations. In both alchemical and mystical systems the elements are used as a simple structure for classification based on the sensory world mirroring that of human physical, emotional and psychological understanding. These elemental attributes of earth, air, fire and water can also be applied to scents. In this experiential ongoing class, Roxana will be your guide to explore a palette of high vibrational essential oils, what their elemental properties are and how to use them in our lives to facilitate greater understanding. Please come unscented - do not wear perfume or cologne - with paper and pencil to begin our journey into the ancient, richly woven tapestry of aromatic knowledge.  Class includes a handout and a 10% discount to use at the perfumery on the day of the event. This is an ongoing exploration.

Featured artist in the gallery this month is NOISE. Live DJ and opportunity to purchase red wrist bands for wine at Blue Table Wine & Cheese Bar to support the event.

The perfumery will be open during this event, stop by to experience a dose of nature in a beautiful, inspiring space.

THE TEMPLE of DELPHI
Date: Saturday, May 24th with Greg Spalenka
More details coming soon

The words, "Know Thyself" were chiseled into the stone of the ancient temple at Delphi but what do they really mean? Have you ever felt like a boat adrift at sea with no direction or focus, unclear about career goals or yearning for a deeper meaning to your existence?

Greg Spalenka will be your guide as you and the group dive into the temple of your hearts and open the doors to powerful wisdom that will help answer these questions, revealing the purpose of your life. In addition to accessing the clarity of who we are, you will learn how to create a symbol that represents this sacred part of ourselves. This workshop is for all who want to live an inspired and fulfilling life: Bring a pencil and paper and get ready for some transformation.

To deepen the experience Roxana will bring several essential oils with attributes assigned to each virtue to facilitate transformation and connection to the divine source within each of us.

Opening image: Pythia of the Oracle of Delphi by John Collier. If we constructed a scent for that first image we would use: one drop of choya for the smoke element and to bring in a bit of the sea and lightening; bay laurel; mitti attar for the earth; frankincense and sandalwood; for higher consciousness and some Greek and California white sage for purification. Want some? Attendees of this class will receive a free container.

Plant Dye Intensive Summary

The plant dye workshop that was originally scheduled for March 1st took place this past Sunday, on March 8th. Lucky for the teacher and attendees it was a fabulously sunny and beautiful day here in the Santa Monica Mountains which added a deeper shade of magic to the whole experience.

Mona, Greg and I arrived at the perfumery early to get things set up. The night before I prepared two things for the day, both based on lavender. The first was a whipped cream cheese and the second was a hand and body balm. For the whipped cream cheese I took one standard block of cream cheese and put it in the food processor with 1 tablespoon Hedcote lavender blossoms (from Ojai), a teaspoon dried Rosemary from our back lot and a few other random herbs that I can't remember...probably sage. I whipped all of together and then put into a glass container for the following morning.

The hand and body butter is something I've been making for a couple years. At some point soon, when I am convinced that it is a fabulous product, it will become available. If any of you fine readers would like a sample tossed into your next order please send me a note.

Back to the workshop...we set up two boiling pots and a large selection of plant material down the hallway next to the perfumery. Meanwhile, inside we set up the other items we would be using and snacks at the lavender colored table within the teaching area.

For our first project we had the option of choosing to dye fabric for a travel bag for our wool wrap or dye a silk scarf. I choose a rectangular silk scarf. The second project was a long wool shawl. Before the dying process Mona took us outside and explained the different colors that the plants might impart to our fabric. There are generalities with plants and colors, but as nature contains wild magick which cannot be tamed, sometimes the color varies. She had fun names for each of the different Eucalyptus leaves, like "Lost Hills" etc. which relates to an exact tree in an area.

We each selected a spot, spread out our fabric and began our compositions, in complete awareness of letting go to the intention of the plant divas. I choose to go for a water color type look for the scarf with colors from my palette, to achieve my desire I used plant materials that printed more in darker brown, umber and mauve hues. This included onion skins and an iron fleur de lis that would add some black.

Once we had all the plant material placed we rolled it all up and tied them with string. Greg's looked like a sushi hand roll, while mine was a super odd shape due to the fleur de lis iron. Once they were rolled and ready we through them into the pot. By the way, a nice benefit of using eucalyptus leaves and other botanicals is that it fills the space with the aromatic molecules, in this case Eucalyptus which made the day feel like we were at a spa.

While our first pieces cooked we each worked on the pocket for our wool shawl and or the travel bag. The pocket for my shawl was made of a few different fabrics including one little piece meant to hang to give it a boho type quality.

Next came the removal and unveiling of first eco printed items. When we pulled them out of the pot they were really hot and steaming, which was tricky when unrolling. Here is a photo of Teresa with hers and one of Monica, leaves and matter included. You will notice how one is more graphic and one more washes of color.

After lunch down at Blue Table we began pulling out our secondary bundles out of the pots. The unveiling of each persons piece was always exciting, producing lots of ou's and  awes.

Above is my wool shawl, freshly unrolled and below folded with pocket exposed.

I'm so grateful to have had Mona come and share her vast knowledge with each of us. It was such a wonder filled day that I wish for every one. Doing these types of activities connects us more deeply to nature and in doing so eases anxiety and increases our relationship with Gaia and other sentient beings on this planet that we share.

Next workshop with Mona will be "Color from the Kitchen" planned for April, details coming soon!

Plant Dye Demo ReCap

The plant dye demo on Saturday was great fun. Despite the rain we had a terrific gathering of ladies ranging from devotees of gardening, native plants, the fiber community, Waldorf and artists.

We arrived at the perfumery early to begin organizing elements for the day. Mona began warming the color, I hung the pre-dyed square kerchiefs to make selection more fluid. Although the heating of the dye bath took place in the interior of the space the dye process took place just outside to take advantage of the natural light and avoid clutter of bodies.

During the week I received a message from Mona telling me that in preparation for the class she was going to make herself a special shirt for the day with some of the rose petal printed leaf silks with some of the pink color added.

The lecture was presented within Mitchells Bookshop where there was ample space for all the attendees. Mona explained how natural dyes have a beautiful, long history where each color and plant has a story of its own. She shared how in the modern world, where synthetic dyes dominate, there are rivers in different areas of the planet that will run in different colors depending on what the big, multi-national factory might be dyeing that dye. The result of these types of practices is cities, communities and cultures are then poisoned by the toxic runoff.

With natural dyes we go back to our routes and the vital connection to plants. The process requires much time and patience but has the value supporting agriculture, our environment and handwork. I couldn't help but see the perfect connection to the fine art of botanical perfume.

Mona shared with us her yarn basket which showcases all the different colors obtained from the natural world, except one. We were all asked to guess which one within her basket did not come from nature, do you know which? None of us in attendance guessed correctly.

Besides some biology and psychology of color we also learned a bit of chemistry that not all the dyes are fugitive and thus must be treated with a "mordant" so that the color can adhere to the fabric for washing. This has to do with positive and negative charges between fabric and dye.

After the lecture we walked down the hall, picked up our squares and formed a line. Mona gave suggestions on how to go about dipping our fabric and what might take place depending how various procedures such as moistening in water first or not, dipping only the edges, folding or tying, etc.

Each piece was then hung on a line to dry. The final pieces were as varied as each of the attendees. Here is a photo of Pia (below) as she got ready to leave the byproduct of the day: pink fingers.

The next class in this series will be the day long course where Mona will get into the nitty gritty of the process, share her personal formulas as we dye our very own wool shawl.
