Santal

A few years ago a customer requested a sandalwood solid perfume. After pondering a bit, I decided to do a sandalwood solifleur by building a rich and voluminous chord/accord to personify this sacred and precious wood.

First I combined a variety of sandalwood essential oils from different locations, for example Sri Lanka, New Caledonia and Hawaii. I then added a very special and rare vintage sandalwood I have from Mysore, India. To make it deeper I added other resins, roots, flowers, seeds and precious woods. The result was a seducing, intoxicating riff on sandalwood. I had about ten little pink pots with some of the solid perfume to sample that went out to various customers.

Although the fragrance was not released I have come back to it often, waiting for the perfect moment which has finally presented itself!

In December Steve Robertson of Project Peace on Earth attended our Makers Market Holiday Faire and asked if I would contribute samples of the perfume devoted to Peace for the Global Peace Song Award Gala in downtown Los Angeles. I enthusiastically replied yes and after looking over formula for the 2009 edition of the fragrance decided to build the new version with the sandalwood solifleur as the main chord. I'll be posting more about it soon, just wanted to give you a heads up since the by invitation only event takes place next Saturday.

International Peace Day!

Happy International Day of Peace, while we still have a bit of light here in California! This photo is a sample of a perfume I created back in 2009 as part of a friends vision to create a world musical prayer called "Project Peace on Earth." To Bee at Perfume Shrine and World Peace Day

Tomorrow is World Peace Day and today Elena over at Perfume Shrine has published a very sweet review of To Bee Natural Perfume.

Thus, for this day I am advocating we all anoint ourselves with a combination of the Perfume Devoted to Peace and To Bee. Both of these fragrances have honey notes and as is the case with all my "fumes" they have the ability to bring one more inner peace due to the high essential oil content.

There are many ways to layer or wear more than one illuminated perfume at a time. When I am in full production mode here at the studio I generally will put one perfume on each limb. Yesterday for example I had Aurora on my left arm and To Bee on my right. I also will often layer a solid over a liquid or vice versa. If you have really dry skin I applying the solid the liquid may facilitate more longevity. Above all experiment, have fun and breath in the moment deeply.

Peace on Earth

Peace + Earth = Peace on Earth

The scent for this day celebrating the Earth is a little alchemy, an aromatic equation. I have layered Terrestre solid over the the liquid perfume devoted to Peace, thus producing Peace on Earth!

Seems extra fitting on this day to wear a perfume constructed from the organic, natural materials of the earth. The grounding affect of the aromatherapy essences contained within Terrestre facilitate the "here and now" while the perfume devoted to Peace imparts elevation and serenity. Layered together a synergy is born with the whole being far greater than the sum of it's parts.

Earth Day was the brain child of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson forty years ago. Thanks to visionaries, 40 years later, Earth Day is a prominent event across the planet. What are you doing today? Take at the very least a moment to be in the garden or park and experience the beauty and bounty of the Earth. Perhaps, beginning today, that intention will manifest for more citizens of the Earth and we can truly begin stirring our beloved Spaceship to greener pastures.

of Service

Sending tendrils of warm and aromatic gratitude to all those who devote themselves to service and a higher cause.

One of the most visionary actions I've witnessed a politician do is work towards creating a Department of Peace. It's brilliant, so much so that those in the dark can't even see it. I don't know about you but I am really tired and distressed at what I see happening in America. Mostly because the masses seem to get dumber and number by the day.

In either case, it's really rare to come across a politician that is of service to the people, I'm so happy to have met one live and in person.

The Scent of the Day is the botanical perfume Peace or in it's parallel format as a solid natural perfume. I'm wearing the solid.

Today is the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi, if he were still walking this planet as a human he would be 140 years old. Happy Birthday dear Gandhi!

On this auspicious day I have the two winners of the perfume devoted to peace samples. They are the Ace of Hearts: Charlotte Vale and the King of Clubs: Linda K. The solid natural perfume mini will be going to Linda K who specified she wanted to try a solid, while the liquid botanical perfume sample will go to Charlotte. Peace Train

On Monday the perfume devoted to Peace was released with a grand welcome mat by the perfume blogging community. Ten individuals received the three main chords (accords) and the final perfume to review. These ten individuals represent the first circle in a series of concentric circles. Impressions of Peace

The sphere is vibrating with threads of serenity today on the International Day of Peace. Aligned in a harmony of peace, a merry band of bloggers has joined together to share thoughts and impressions of Peace and the new botanical perfume devoted to Peace. At the bottom of this post please follow the links to each of the blogs participating.

{ The Nature of Peace }

The perfume devoted to Peace does not go by a name but the modern symbol for peace that became part of popular culture in the sixties. Iconic images are created when they become a mass sensation, this particular revolutionary decade produced a wealth of imagery which has become forever emblazoned in the minds. Besides the little circular image with the upside down Y-like letter we also have two fingers of the hand in a V-like mudra that also conveys the same message. It was certainly a very creative time to be on spaceship planet earth.

At a cocktail party in the Hollywood Hills the a couple weekends ago, the hostess asked me how things were going with my perfumes. I shared that I had a new perfume inspired by Peace about to be released. The handsome fellow standing next to her chuckles and asks, "Will it have marijuana in it?" I answered, "No, put we do have an essential oils of hemp." From there the conversation traversed into the current news worthy topic of marijuana. I suppose if the idea had occurred to me earlier I could have woven some of the more herbaceous notes with the hemp for the peace perfume, but, then we would have Vera!

Let's back track a bit, the new fragrance came into being out of an intent to help a friend manifest his vision of an annual worldwide telecast concert of Superstar musicians performing Sacred Music from the most mystical concert venues on the planet: Egypt's Great Pyramids, England’s Stonehenge, Australia's Ayers Rock, Peru's Inca Pyramids, Japan's Mount Fuji, and California's Mount Shasta. His vision has not yet been realized. I intend that this perfume will facilitate the birth of this glorious idea, just as the perfume Q facilitates manifesting consciousness for the California coastal live oaks.


My husband, Greg, dived into the project first by creating an image for the campaign. He collaborated with Tibetan master Romio Shrestha to create a stunning image that is reminscent of the sixties era yet still modern. Since this was to be the illumination for the new perfume we selected the a shade of burgundy from my color palette which was also in Greg's image the image. Purple was the other possibility but I have two other fragrances with that color resonance already in the line, thus burgundy.

As I contemplated creating this perfume my first thoughts went to the essences from my studies in Aromatherapy which evoked a sense of peace. The first ones to come to mind were:

• Cedarwood
• Chamomile
• Citrus essences like Bergamot, Orange, Tangerine and Neroli
• Frankincense
• Geranium
• Lavender
• Marjoram
• Sandalwood
• Ylang Ylang

Basically ALL clinical essential oils in some way promote a feeling of serenity by there very nature. Essential oils are concentrated, potent, plant energies that aid relaxation and stress relief. Thus, any perfume composed primarily of clinical grade essential oils will have an affect of peace, unless the individual has a negative scent association with a specific essence or a shadow aspect that needs resolving.


From there I began to explore the terrain of Incense. The word perfume comes from the latin, per “through” and fumus “smoke”, thus “through smoke." Aromatic, sweet smelling smoke is a religious and spiritual practice used as a means to transport our intent to the heavens. This idea felt good. I have done quite a bit with incense and smoke in my perfume line, I knew it would need to transcend what I had done in the past. I also knew I wanted to add one or all three of the Lotus essences available because Greg's image featured a Goddess sitting on a Lotus.

At a fund raiser for Project Peace on Earth I introduced the idea to a large group and had them give me feedback on about ten different essences including:

• Champa
• Frankincense
• Jasmine
  
• Neroli
• Rose
• Sandalwood
• White Lotus

The essences that seemed to get the biggest response were Champa, Sandalwood, Neroli and White Lotus. Thus, I placed each of those into my minds cauldron and meditated on how to orchestrate the perfume. Many of the essences utilized are exotic and precious. The cost of raw materials for a natural botanical perfumer are exorbitant. Mindfulness is required when working with some of these divas to coax them into a harmonic resonance.


Botanical perfume is a necessary luxury. By supporting botanical perfume one then supports organic agriculture and small independent labor all over the planet. True botanical perfumery cannot be a mass market, inexpensive commodity. This is due to the cost of the raw materials combined with the skills of farmers, distillers and the artisans who then craft the final elixir. The main benefit is that the individual who decides to support botanical perfume is then supporting a host of fabulous, interconnected industries like organic farming, bee keeping, handmade, indie business, and the arts. Each of these represent part of ancient systems that are important to foster and continue to cultivate. Botanical perfume brings together the old with the new in such a way that supports the whole.

With the concept of the concert in mind, I orchestrated the fragrance like a symphony with three complex chords of base, middle and top notes. Each chord contains up to seven different notes. The top chord features Neroli with supporting citruses and a few spice notes. The middle chord is the most complex with over thirteen individual essences featuring Champa supported by both White and Blue Lotus. The base is a very rich, earthy chord with Tobacco and Vanilla. There are over thirty pure, plant essences combined in organic, food grade, grape and grain alcohol in the liquid perfume extract.


In keeping with the vision of Project Peace on Earth the perfume contains essences from each continent, including locations close to the sacred sites for the performances. Greg is working with me on a pictorial image that will illustrate this concept.

Photographing Peace

Here are the first batch of photos of the perfume inspired by Project Peace on Earth.

We chose a burgundy tone for her color resonance.

The liquid perfume is contained in a French glass flacon
filled with 7 grams of pure extract of this heavenly elixir.
The secure Penny shaped top is also an applicator.
The botanical perfume is created using organic essences derived from essential oils,
absolutes and C02 extractions in a base of beverage grade organic grain and grape alcohol.

The ends of the pouch mimics the lotus flower in the illustrated image by Greg Spalenka.

We chose the copper peace sign for the charm.



The solid natural perfume comes in an antique finish metal compact contained in a burgundy hand crocheted pouch with the cooper peace charm. I pour our solid perfumes into a separate container with the metal compact to ensure lasting performance so that the vintage gets better with age and does not adversely react with the metal.

Autumnal

Here at the little woodland house of creativity Autumn has made her appearance. Formerly she will reach her mark next Tuesday for Mabon/ The Fall Equinox.

We notice the arrival of the new temperate season of Harvest by the acorns that appear under the California Live Oaks. The weather is still warm most of the time but we have gotten out our sweaters and are not running the air conditioning system. Quite the opposite on the other side of the equator in the Southern hemisphere where Spring is arriving.

Eve has started school again, so the languid energetics of summer have been replaced by more rhythmic systems, at least for Eve and I. Greg, for the most part, remains in his own more languid universe of right brain flow.

The perfume devoted to Peace will release September 21st, this coming Moon-day, which is the International Day of Peace and also coincides with the Equinox the following day. As you may have noticed I have been trending toward releasing my botanical perfumes on significant pagan events like High Celtic Holy days or an analogous association like significant Lunar activity. Although I was brought up Catholic, I am most comfortable unbounded by religious dogma and veer toward more pagan, wiccan and eastern thought patterns.

I have been wearing the new perfume and testing it on family members for the last few days. To my nose, it feels very appropriate for moving into this new season. The overall impression is earthy floral notes layered over warm spicy balsamics with a touch of fruit.

A whimsical notion

According to Dictionary.com one of the definitions of crochet as a noun is "an odd fancy or whimsical notion." Rather nice don't you think? Here are some new and old photos of the beautiful, crochet pouches which have been made exclusively for our illuminated perfumes, in keeping with a sophisticated handmade aesthetic.



Reading further, in the Encyclopedia we find: crochet

"craft that developed in the 19th century out of a form of chain-stitch embroidery done with a hook instead of a needle. In crochet work the hook is used, without a foundation material, to make a texture of looped and interlinked chains of thread. In the late 1840s crochet was introduced into Ireland as a famine relief measure. In southern Ireland the industry centered in Cork, in northern Ireland at Clones in County Monaghan. As it became more sophisticated, crochet work approximated lace, antique laces such as gros point de Venise, or Venetian raised lace, being successfully imitated."

Although my mother, Martha, and I were born in Buenos Aires our ancestry goes back to Ireland. The cuffs in the first photo are available for purchase from my mother's shop on Etsy where you can see a variety of her very fine crochet and knitted work.


The idea for the pouches came out of a yearning to have the packaging for my perfumes be different, since the bottles are compacts are not.


Each perfume has a color from my palette assigned to it. My mother has a copy of my palette and is the one who seeks out the yarn. She just brought me a sample of the green we may be utilizing for the botanical perfume GreenWitch. Unfortunately it may be a bit too close to the green we use for Q.


The perfume devoted to Peace has a red pouch, similar to the burgundy tones of Vespertina but a bit brighter. Page 47 currently has an antique gold and off white as her color tone.


I'll take some photos of the soon to be debuted perfume for Peace in a few days. Thank you to all those who voted for your favorite pouch and bead design back in July. The official date for the release of this new fragrance in both liquid and solid format will be September 21st, the International Day of Peace.

Peace Perfume: Packaging

I have a few samples of the pouch for the Peace Perfume that I'd like to share with you all. We decided to choose a color from the beautiful image that Greg created with Romio Shrestha. It was important that the color was also part of the palette utilized for the branding of Roxana Illuminated Perfume. In the end we choose a burgundy tone that is a bit brighter than the one we use for Vespertina.


Besides the color we needed to consider the top edging on the pouch and the design elements. Below you will see two variations we are considering. The first is a simple pouch with a ruffle top utilizing a small copper Buddha head for the closer. The second is a bit more elaborate pouch with ruffles and a bronze peace sign. We also have an Aum sign as a potential alternate.


Which do you like the best? I've created a poll to get some feedback, please respond so that we can get a sense of what the general favorite is. Peace Perfume: Part One

Steve Robertson the Founder of Project-Peace on Earth, along with Director Marc Scarpa are in Israel, and Palestine working out the logistics of the September 19th concert in Manger Square, Bethlehem. Robertson and Scarpa are meeting a host of dignitaries and officials who are helping shape this historic, globally telecast musical event.

Greg and I first met Steve Robertson and his beautiful wife Teresita back in 2005 at a "Heart Virtue Focus Group" with Greg Mooers. It was at this profound workshop that we learned of the vision Steve had in his heart about creating a concert focused on Peace. This initial vision has now expanded into a Six Hour Globally Telecast Musical Prayer for Peace with the intention to create these event yearly.

When Greg and I heard Steve proclaim his mission back in 2005 we knew we wanted to help out with our talent as artists. Greg began by brain storming with Steve and his other advisory board members on how to promote the event. It was at a fundraiser on Valentines Day last year, with the Tibetan artist Romio Shrestra, that Greg and I saw and felt exactly how we could get involved to facilitate Steves heart felt mission.


Greg began his process by meeting with Romio to create an image that fuses the consciousness of East and West. Within a month, in the middle of March, the Project-Peace on Earth signature image was debuted.


A small version of the "Peace Has Begun" print has been making the rounds with Steve and Marc. It's exciting to watch this image become an iconic emissary for peace. The Mayor of Bethlehem. Dr. Victor Batarseh holds one up in his office with Robertson, Scarpa, and Jihan Anastas Director of the Bethlehem Peace Center. Other pic's show the art with Dr. Abu Dayyeh, Minister of Tourism Palestine, and in Manger Square.


A limited edition of only twenty five, 32"x48" giclee prints of this collaborative artwork created by Greg with Tibetan master Romio Shrestha are being sold to benefit the production of this concert. This is truly an opportunity to invest in a moment of peace history, for the children of the middle east, for the world.

In the meantime I have been diligently working on the Perfume for Project-Peace on Earth which will debut on September 22nd, 2009. The intention is that the perfume will be an emissary for peace as Greg's image has become. More to be revealed in the Peace Perfume: Part Two journal post.

Saturn Day & Night Events

I have been invited to be one of the featured artists at the California Craft and Folk Art Museum Global Bazaar. Here is the text from their website:

"Along with LACMA's annual event, LACMA MUSE ART WALK, CAFAM will be featuring over 15 local vendors, offering the best in handcrafted, fair-trade, and artisan-produced items. Some one-of-a-kind treasures you will find include ceramics, handmade candles, vintage image magnets, jewelry, clothing, hand-blended fragrant oils, hand-blown glass, and more. As always, CAFAMs award-winning Museum Shop will be open with a further array of worldly treasures! Music and refreshments will be provided."

The location is the California Craft and Folk Art Museum Courtyard located at 5814 Wilshire Blvd., across the street from LACMA.

I will be bringing an array of all our scented delights as well as some of the brand new perfume lockets created in collaboration with Lori Patton of Heartworks by Lori.

Please stop by and introduce yourself. Master Gregorio, the illuminator of our perfumes, will also be on hand. We look forward to meeting you and sharing the world of botanical perfumery.


In the evening we are off to a fund raising event for Project Peace on Earth to finance the upcoming June 7-12 pre-production trip to Manger Square in Bethlehem, Palestine. Greg and I met Steve Robertson (the brainchild of Project Peace on Earth) and his loving wife Teresita when we all did the "Heart Virtue" Saturday workshop together. We are delighted to be contributing our talent to help raise funds for this extraordinary event.

I have been formulating a perfume for Project Peace On Earth for some time now. At the event I will offer a short educational presentation about botanical perfumery and the quest to manifest a Peace Perfume. I am looking forward to everyones feedback on what the is the scent we most associate with peace.

In early 2008 Greg began collaborating with the renown T’angka painter Romio Shrestha to create an image together for Project Peace on Earth. There will be two limited edition versions for sale, (300) 26"x39" lithograph posters at $50.00 each, and (25) 32"x48" high end giclee prints at $1000.00 each. These prints will be numbered, signed, and embossed by the Peace Has Begun seal.
