The Scent of Summer

The garden is very fragrant with the herbaceous scent of the native, white sage at the moment. On days when the air is clear and I am working in the garden I can perceive the aroma of the sage in the soil, which reminds me of the sand at the beach.

Fragrance is a very personal experience, most often tied to our memories. As I ponder "Scents of Summer" I think of childhood when I would go to beach regularly or trips to Catalina Island on my best friends sailboat.  For someone leaving land locked, in say Missouri, they most likely won't have any ocean related scents, and thus a completely different list from mine.

What would go on your list? Here's mine, botanical origin, pulled from my scent palette:

Seaweed absolute
Choya (seashells) which smells of smoke, like summer campfires
Galbanum, green, fresh cut leaves
Citrus: lemon (lemonaid), orange (Orange Julius in Newport beach)
Herbs: Thyme, oregano, parsley, sage, rosemary
Flowers: Plumeria, lavender, tuberose
Fruity: Berries
Not of botanical origin:
Sunscreen
Chlorine

Here's a selection from the Illuminated Collection:
SEA: GreenWitch
BEACH: Page 47
GREEN: Hedera helix
CITRUS: Blossom Cologne (returning June 22nd)
HERBS: Vera
SMOKE: Chaparral, Terrestre, Aumbre and Q
FLOWERS: Chiaroscuro, Rosa, Gracing the Dawn
FRUITY: Cimbalom

The Scent of Gratitude

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Wafting my deepest gratitude to each one of you as we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the United States. I'm so grateful for all of you who stop by here, who comment, those who appreciate and support my creative endeavors, new and old. From the deepest crevices of my heart I send you my love.

My SOTD, Scent of Thanksgiving Day, is Q solid layered over Chaparral liquid. I'm wafting in uni-sexy, woody instead of the standard floral for festive holiday gatherings and outings. The perfume devoted to Peace seemed like a good candidate as well, but, in the end I wanted something more Autumn-like.

Scent of the Day: Grace

In the midst of pouring a 1 gram vial of Gracing the Dawn for a customer I decided to put some on since I hadn't worn this one in over a week. Today I am experiencing some spice black pepper notes in the opening which I hadn't picked up on before.

As I walked from my studio into my husband's he remarked, "Wow, something smells REALLY good!" I thought, hmmm, could it be? So I put my wrist out for him to smell, his second remark, "That's a beautiful one." Conclusion: Gracing the Dawn has some nice silage girlfriends.

Apologies to all the members of the Faery Ring, your samples are going out in the next few days. I got hung up on making your packages really pretty visually.

Peace on Earth

“Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness
should be waiting for us in our graves - or whether it should be ours here and now
and on this earth.”
~ Ayn Rand

Peace + Earth = Peace on Earth

The scent for this day celebrating the Earth is a little alchemy, an aromatic equation. I have layered Terrestre solid over the the liquid perfume devoted to Peace, thus producing Peace on Earth!

"No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth,
and no culture comparable to that of the garden."
~ Thomas Jefferson

Seems extra fitting on this day to wear a perfume constructed from the organic, natural materials of the earth. The grounding affect of the aromatherapy essences contained within Terrestre facilitate the "here and now" while the perfume devoted to Peace imparts elevation and serenity. Layered together a synergy is born with the whole being far greater than the sum of it's parts.

"Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet
and the winds long to play with your hair."
~ Kahlil Gibran

Earth Day was the brain child of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson forty years ago. Thanks to visionaries, 40 years later, Earth Day is a prominent event across the planet. What are you doing today? Take at the very least a moment to be in the garden or park and experience the beauty and bounty of the Earth. Perhaps, beginning today, that intention will manifest for more citizens of the Earth and we can truly begin stirring our beloved Spaceship to greener pastures.

Choux & Vespertina

The scent of my day today has been Vespertina™ solid perfume mixed with the aroma of puffed pastry. Eve and I decided to make Cream Puffs this very rainy and grey washed day in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Invented in France, by the Pastry chef of Catherine de Medici, Puff Pastry is referred to as Choux meaning small cabbages, according to Stephanie Jaworski at The Joy of Baking. The word was most likely used because the small puffs of pastry when cooked resemble cabbages.

We filled ours with fresh blueberries and homemade whipped cream. The crispy pastries turned out delicious. Decadent, rich and extremely messy to eat...but well worth it.

Vespertina™ solid perfume feels like a good match with French pastries. The Jasmine and Rose in this fragrance have a vintage yet modern feel, like something Kirsten Dunst would have worn while filming Marie Antoinette. Staying close to the skin she would have enjoyed it's aromatic without nuking her fellow actors overpowering silage.

Eve and I are planning a photo shoot inspired by these photographs from the film Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola. Here's a small clip for you to enjoy...

Let's Dance!

"Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind."
~ Seals & Crofts

The Jasmine sambac plants in my garden have all decided to begin flowering. A little late this year, not sure why, perhaps because now that I am back from various travels they are getting consistent water.

I adore Jasmine sambac both as a fresh flower and as a single note perfume. The heavy, rich, sweet, floral, green note is a favorite of mine as a botanical perfume artist. Jasmine sambac is like the color pthalo blue and green in my paintings, a reoccurring theme.

The botanical perfume I have created that features this heavenly note in abundance is Cimbalom, created almost a year ago for my birthday. She can also be noted in Lyra (both liquid and solid) and in smaller quantities in Vespertina, Aurora, Vera and Rosa.

Some consider Jasmine the Queen of the Night because a few varieties bloom in the evening, impregnating the air with her sultry aroma. Beckoning you to depart from the mental filled duties of our daily lives she asks you come dance a more creative, sensuous life.

The Scent of the day, is Jasmine! I suggest dancing the weekend in with Cimbalom, she contains three varieties of Jasmine and will facilitate in transcending you from the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Scent of the Day: Cimbalom

The weather has shifted dramatically here in the City of Angels. For the last two weeks we had a rather intense period of June gloom. Normally June gloom here in Southern California means morning fog which burns off to a beautiful day by noon. This new alternate universe June gloom featured cold and clouds 24/7. I was wearing a sweater most of the day and even leg warmers and fingerless gloves in the morning.

Then yesterday, swoosh, we are back from the alternate universe but now with hot weather. Woolies get put away and out come the dresses and tank tops. What I find most interesting is that my olfactory sense has shifted dramatically with the climate. Chaparral Solid seems to be my number one fav fragrance to wear when the weather is cold and gloomy. However, when the heat arrives I am attracted to earthy florals, specifically Cimbalom. Yesterday I slathered myself in Cimbalom and found myself in such a glorious reverly of indolic, floral bliss.

Thus, the fragrance for the day is Cimbalom, in her all lusty Jasmine glory. Interesting to note that the Jasmine sambac plants in my garden are all about to burst open. Cheers to Jasmine and the upcoming Summer Solstice this Sunday! Have you made a Summer Solstice fragrance for yourself?

Here are a few comments about Cimbalom for you:

"Roxana, your "Birthday Balm" is exquisite. When I closed my eyes I was transported to a blossom and incense scented harem. I felt as though I had entered a hidden world of women-- where sensuous secrets are revealed. It is delicate, potent, sexy-- irresistible."
~ D. Alexander

"Hypnotically addicting...can NOT get enough. Wish I could bathe, drink and surround myself w these scents 24/7. More than just winners ; a way of life for those who appreciate themselves."
~ E. Warshavsky

Save the Oaks

The scent of the day is Q, Quercus agrifolia, devoted to the Coastal Live Oak. I started my fragrance line with this botanical perfume. The intention connected with Q is to bring awareness to the native Oaks of California. This path was revealed when a contractor bought the empty lot next to us to build a huge McMansion. We organized our neighborhood to protect the Oaks and the development of the lot.

To my regret, the contractor that we have been wrestling with has come back from the dead. Although the bank foreclosed on his other project, like a horror film, he has returned. We received the letter from the city informing us that another hearing has been set. Good grief, here we go yet again!

I'm feeling quite distraught at the moment. Intending that in the morrow the feisty self will be back, ready to once again organize the neighbors to defend oaks and land. I am calling forth Soverieignty, the Celtic Goddess of the land, to help us. According to the book The Celtic Way of Seeing: "Sovereignty holds the the axis mundi. She is the one who bestows "rulership" to those who are in right relationship with her."1 Thus, please anoint yourselves with Q and appeal to Sovereignty for her assistance.

I took the photo at top on Monday while hiking in Malibu State Park. It is a gigantic Quercus lobata we came across on our adventure through the woods.

Contact

Dr. Kent Clark: Nice to smell you again, Mr. Kitz.
Michael Kitz: You too.
Dr. Kent Clark: [aside] Wouldn't have pegged him as a Polo man.

On Twitter a few weeks ago I read a tweet by friend and fellow artist Dave McKean. He mentioned watching the film Contact with his son. I had forgotten about the film and decided that the next opportune moment I would watch it with my daughter Eve.

The first time I saw Contact was in a theater when it was first released back in 1997. I remember being so inspired that I came home and started sketching. The sketch soon tuned into a painting that is now beloved by many and hangs in our home.

Greg, Eve and I all watched Contact this past Saturn evening. (Saturday is named after the planet Saturn.) This film has a terrific story, is extremely well crafted and superb actors, all of which make an equation for excellence. Here are a few of the quotes that stood out for me and really touched deep into my heart.

~

Executive: We must confess that your proposal seems less like science and more like science fiction.
Ellie Arroway: Science fiction. Well you're right, it's crazy. In fact, it's even worse than that, nuts.
[angrily slams down her briefcase and marches up to the desk]
Ellie Arroway: You wanna hear something really nutty? I heard of a couple guys who wanna build something called an "airplane," you know you get people to go in, and fly around like birds, it's ridiculous, right? And what about breaking the sound barrier, or rockets to the moon, or atomic energy, or a mission to Mars? Science fiction, right? Look, all I'm asking, is for you to just have the tiniest bit of vision. You know, to just sit back for one minute and look at the big picture. To take a chance on something that just might end up being the most profoundly impactful moment for humanity, for the history... of history.

~

David Drumlin: I know you must think this is all very unfair. Maybe that's an understatement. What you don't know is I agree. I wish the world was a place where fair was the bottom line, where the kind of idealism you showed at the hearing was rewarded, not taken advantage of. Unfortunately, we don't live in that world.
Ellie Arroway: Funny, I've always believed that the world is what we make of it.

I've chosen Earth Solid Botanical Perfume as the scent of the today. We are currently in search of a name for this perfume. At the moment Terrestre is winning in the poll. Please stop in and vote at this link, if you have not yet done so. Thank you so much to all those who have.

Ode to the TREES

On planet Earth today we celebrate the trees! Those beloved beings that give us oxygen, shade, fruit, wood, and provide homes to many creatures. Thus, the scent for today is the botanical perfume Q, devoted to the California native Oak, the Coastal Live Oak Quercus agrifolia.

"I am the Lorax,
I speak for the trees,

for the trees have no tongues."
- Dr. Suess

Let's be crystal clear here, the Palm, more a grass than a tree, that has become emblematic with Los Angeles is not native to this region. Further south it is...but not in LA. Thousands, maybe more, native Oak trees have been removed for the sake of human housing and industry. To add insult to injury folk have been removing oaks and replacing them with palms to create an "exotic" feel to their homes. Hello? Even the City of LA does this! Oak trees give us shade, convert Co2 into oxygen, provide homes to beneficial insects and wildlife and aesthetically work beautifully with other native plants to bestow an authentic style to a Los Angeles home.

Kill your lawn, go native!

The word Oak in the Celtic language is Duir meaning door. My path to awareness of the California Oak and native plants began with this gracious tree. Read more about this at the links provided below.

Anoint yourself today with the the botanical perfume Q, connecting to the energetics of the Mighty Oak. Open the Duirwaigh. A percentage of the profits from every 1/4 oz flacon of Q sold is given to the California Oak Foundation.

I leave you with this clip from Lord of the Rings.

Scent of the Day: OAK

For the scent of the next few days I'm choosing Q, the botanical perfume devoted to the Coastal Live Oak of California. The Celtic tree month of the Oak isn't until June, we are currently in the Alder phase. The oak, with it's association to strength feels like a good one.

Here is what the renown faerie artist Wendy Froud has to say about our Oak perfume, Q:

"I love fragrances and everything that my favorite ones evoke but I was truly captivated by Roxana's Q perfume the first time I experienced it. It evokes something ancient and at the same time very intimate and personal. To me it's a "remembered" fragrance that taps into the green world of Faerie in the same way that a painting or sculpted image can. When I wear it, which is often, I feel closer to that elusive and magical world."

Wendy and Brain will be making an appearance at the Trolls and Legends Festival in Belgium. Here's this from the website:
"Around the theme of Faery, enter the world of Fantasy and live three days in the universe of fairies and elfs with, concerts, animations, a games convention, many entertainments for everyone, a fairy market and about fifty authors for an unforgettable moment!"

I wanna go! Here's a link.

Scent of the Day: AIRES

Here we are once again being lit by the silvery light of a new moon. The specifics of this lunar phase are associated with the ram, Aires. To be precise, we entered the new moon yesterday and now find ourself with both the Sun and Moon aligned in the first sign of the zodiac.

I found a rather nice little piece on the new moon here. I like how they are focusing on getting us on track with our essential purpose, what I have referred to on this journal as our heart virtue. The scent to assist with this planetary line up to connect with our SELF is the one YOU feel most connected with!

For me, I'm going with Chaparral Solid again. Not sure whether it's the woods or the frankincense, either way it's the one that is really does it for me in this sacred moment.

Other activities for this new moon phase including tincturing and infusing. I've been patiently waiting for this new moon and have quite a lot of work before me. Promise to report back here with pictures...and at my flickr account as well.

Scent of the Day: WOODS

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately,
to front only the essential facts of life,
and see if I could not learn what it had to teach,
and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
~ Thoreau

The wood note in the botanical perfumers palette stems from the barks of trees. The two primary ingredients in this category are Sandalwood and Cedarwood with others like Japanese Hibawood and Rosewood. Sandalwood and Rosewood are controversial materials due to issues of deforestation of the species. We now use Sandalwood from other sources than the East Indian variety such as New Caledonian and Sri Lankan Sandalwood. Rosewood may be substituted with Howood.

When the trees and vines such as Jasmine begin to bloom my allergies kick in. I tend to find solace in the wood notes. Illuminated perfumes with woody characteristics are Sierra and Chaparral, in both the solid and liquid versions. Rosa gets has an earthy woody quality as well with from the strong presence of precious Agarwood.

For me today, I'm going with Chaparral Solid as my scent. Yesterday I received a lovely note via e-mail from a patron. With his approval I am sharing a few of his words, slightly edited for privacy:

"I received your beautifully packaged sampler set and have fallen under the spell of Chaparral. As a native Californian and sage-lover, it really speaks to me. Thank you for your great work!"

Thank you!

Scent of the Day: Literarium

I've been assisting my daughter with a presentation for school. She came to me and asked, "Mom, do you have any books on the Philosopher's Stone?" Why yes, I replied, lots. In reality I have many books on alchemy but not necessarily the Philosophers Stone. I also realized that most of the books I have are more image based and not content based, thus the indexing is not very good.

However, one book, I knew would be useful is from Greg's library, it's called The Secret Teaching of All Ages by Manly P. Hall. If my house were on fire and I could only choose one book out of all the bizillion books we own, this would be THE ONE. This is a book I could set with until the end of time. I find it tremendously inspirational, as I do with almost all philosophical books that also contain imagery.

We love books, all types of books, but for the most part art books. If you ever visit our little house in the woods you'll see what I mean. Ideally we need one of those English manors with a separate room with shelves for a library. We're still working on manifesting that one.

Thus, the scent for today will be chosen from the Literarium section of our perfumes. What is that you ask? Ah, well, early on in developing my website I was working with a copy writer. He noticed I had many perfumes influenced by books and suggested I create a series titled Literarium. This series honors the fine art of storytelling and includes two botanical perfumes: Lyra and Vespertina. Since Lyra was our scent of the day yesterday, let's go with Vespertina today.

Scent of the Day: Amber

The weather here has been wildly dynamic. In one day I can shift from yoga pants and a spaghetti strap tank to several layers of wool. Late last night Madame Wind Element decided to make her presence known. She moves through the canyon, announcing her arrival as we here her dance through the trees. The sound is very much like the ocean waves.

This Moonday morning beckons for something warm, I've already got a ridiculous amount of wool on from cashmere fingerless gloves, two cardigans, thermals, a crochet skirt, a scarf around my neck and a second larger one draped over my shoulders. Who would guess I am in sunny California! However, within a few hours I may be peeling it all off.

One of the very first accords I ever created was Amber. I now have several different varieties of Amber accords. The material "Amber" within the realm of botanical/natural perfumery is either a fossil resin from the fir tree, Pinus succinifera or most often an accord. There is quite a bit of confusion with the term because it is used to define many different types of scented items. The etymology of the word stems from the Arabic anbar, referring to ambergris. Ambergris is a substance produced by the cachalot whale. In modern times many fragrance developers have created incense and perfumes called Amber, which are composed of a variety of ingredients including many synthetics aroma chemicals.

As a botanical perfumer I have created several Amber accords utilizing resinous materials such as Labdanum, Benzoin, Conifer, Frankincense, as well as Woods, Patchouli, Vetiver, Oakmoss, Clary Sage and Vanilla. Some of my accords are so complex they venture into the terrain of a full fledged perfume.

This is what is on the drawing table for today. Greg has asked me to make more of his signature Amber, friends are asking for the release of the perfume I have been calling Amber and there are accords that need to be made for existing perfumes.

Amber accords are found in Lyra, Aurora, Sierra, Vera and Greenwitch. I've selected to display Lyra as our Scent of the Day poster child, since of the the five mentioned, her Amber accord is the most prevalent.

Scent of the Day: AURORA

"The stars are putting on their glittering belts.
They throw around their shoulders cloaks that flash
Like a great shadow’s last embellishment."
~ Wallace Stevens

The scent for this day is Aurora liquid perfume. The mythological messenger God, who carried the dreams of Morpheus is associated with Wednesday. In keeping with this mercurial theme, it seemed appropriate to bring this news to you this Mercury day.

As my daughter and I walked to the car early this morning we noticed a heavy, floral fragrance in the crisp morning air. It literally stopped both of us in our tracks. The intoxicating bouquet was a combination of sweet greens with jasmine. The Jasminum polyanthum is in full aromatic display now and her warm, exotic fragrance fills the air.

Aurora is a floral perfume with threads of spice reminiscent of carnations. Heart notes include Jasmine as well as Rose and Ylang Ylang.

It's a very busy day here in the studio today, thus I leave you with Divina's inspired review of Aurora:

"What beautiful, twinkling magic has been weaved in this amazing, heart-moving fragrance? Because it is surely magic, or at the very least the magic of art and love, that make this fragrance evolve so stunningly on the skin, going through countless transformations that seduce the senses one after the other..."

Scent of the Day: AURORA

I've been working on the latest edition of Aurora. Last night I went to sleep saturated in her aroma and dreamt in the tone of floral. At 4am I was wide awake, go figure. I'm wondering if it had to do with the verdant Spring energy that is currently pulsing through the plant life here in the Santa Monica Mountains? Or, was it all those stress relieving essential oils in Aurora?

Today's agenda is full and includes, but, not limited to:
Wishing you all a very verdant day!

Scent of the Day: Mars

As I trekked over to Google to process my latest sales I noticed the cool graphic logo they created with craters for the double o's. I clicked and was transported to a feature all about the history of mapping Mars with this very cool little film on You Tube.

Inspired...the official scent for today will be based on Mars. Maestro asked "Why would you want to make a fragrance associated with the God of War?" I answered by reading this list from Cunningham's "The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews":
  • Promote courage
  • Aggression
  • Healing after surgery
  • Physical strength
  • Politics
  • Sexual energy
  • Exorcism
  • Protection
  • Defensive magic
The essence of Mars is red and hot, thus many materials with these two characteristics may be utilized for a Martial fragrance. Here is a list of a few that happen to be in my apothecary, either as a essential oil, absolute, C02 extract or in herbal form:
  • Allspice
  • Asafoetida
  • Artichoke
  • Basil
  • Broom
  • Coriander
  • Cumin
  • Deerstongue
  • Dragon's Blood
  • Galangal
  • Ginger
  • Mustard Seed
  • Nettle
  • Pepper
  • Tobacco
  • Tumeric
  • Woodruff
  • Wormwood
Many of these essences are in my GreenWitch perfume which will debut now for Spring. Thus, the scent today is GreenWitch. Read more about the Green Witch perfume here.

I read this on the HerbsHealing website from an article written by Suzan Stone Sierralupe:
"To be a Witch means that you worship the Earth as a mother, and to be a Green Witch means that you heal the children of the Earth by bringing them back in communication Her. The disciplines of the Green Witch are many; she listens, watches, learns, heals and, most of all, she teaches."

Looks like I am a Green Witch, which explains why Susan Coopers book by the same name is my favorite of the Dark is Rising Series.

Greg is still working on the image that will accommodate our natural, botanical, conceptual and magical perfume. For now our Green Witch perfume will be illuminated by an image he created as the poster for Laguna College of Art & Design.

Scent of the Day: Lucky 13

Since it's Friday the 13th I thought I'd post wear something that relates to lucky 13. My research makes it's way to essential oil associations with luck to come up with todays fragrance. This takes me to "Aromatherapy for the Family" by Jan Kusmirek. Jan has an Index of Mental/Emotional Symptoms on page 24 of this little book.

So, I am pondering what mental/emotional challenges would block someone from luck? Hmm, that would be very individual. I'm thinking and feeling that the essences that would be most relevant are: Clary Sage, Frankincense, YlangYlang, Orange.

Courage: Frankincense, which also works on Perseverance, Paranoia and Self-criticism

Change:
- coping with: Ylang Ylang
- difficulty in adjusting: Clary Sage
- difficulty in making: Orange

Anxiety: Cedarwood, Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Juniper, Lavender, Marjoram, Rosewood, Sandalwood Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang

Keep in mind this is specific to "essential oils" not fragrance oils or synthetic perfume.

The other aspect of luck to check out is magical associations. For this I defer to many of the same references I used when I created the prosperity accord contained in Sierra Solid Gold.

Some of the fragrances (includes essential oils, plant materials and synthetic aromas) associated with Luck according to Scott Cunningham include: Allspice, Calamus, Fern, Hazel, Heather, Irish Moss, Nutmeg, Orange,Poppy seed, Rose, Spikenard, Star Anise, Tonka, Vetiver, and Violet.

The planet connected with luck is Venus, thus all plants associated wiht here would be a great addition. Here are a few: Rose, Orris, Myrtle, Tonka, Tuberose, Ylang Ylang, Vanilla, Rose Geranium and Tonka. Another rather synchronistic item here is that Venus is the planet for Friday!

Well, based on the information gathered here, I suggest Vespertina as our scent of the day. The botanical perfume Vespertina many of the essences discussed and also contains a vibrational aspect of Venus.

This has been terrific to write, I am currently working on a perfume for the Equinox. I have now added a Lucky perfume to the list. Stay tuned on this blog or twitter for their release.

Scent of the Day: ROSA

“I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows

Quite overcanopied with luscious woodbine,

With sweet musk-roses and with elgantine."

~ Shakespeare

Today blooms in Rose with the botanical perfume Rosa, named after the California native wild rose. Of all the flowers that grace our lovely blue planet, no other is featured in poetry and literature like the Rose. With her rich historical references and varied personas she continues to enchant.

The main notes in this dark and luxurious floral perfume is a woven heart of Turkish Rose otto, Indian Rose absolute and a complex accord of Rose. The heart is anchored by the resinous, musky Agarwood and earthy Vetiver. Her top note accessories are mainly in the citrus family.

Off to write about Rose and handmade bath & body products for the ECGC (Etsy Clean and Green) blog.
