April 6th & 7th in Santa Fe, NM

The Art of Botanical Perfume is a level one class, an introduction to making perfume with plants. In the past this was a one day course that always felt rushed and overwhelming, thus now I set it up over two days that will include these seven categories:

  • 1. What is Perfume?
  • 2. History of Perfume
  • 3. Tools & Raw Materials
  • 4. Fragrance Families & Types
  • 5. Olfactory Awareness
  • 6. Artistry
  • 7. Orchestration
For an more in depth description of the workshop look at the online course, although keep in mind that we are squeezing 70 hours into two days. The Art of Botanical Perfume live or online course is a perquisite for the advanced classes. Seating is limited, grab your spot today.

March 9th & 10th in Encino, CA
April 13th & 14th Santa Fe, NM

This two day workshop is for those who have taken the
ART OF BOTANICAL PERFUME
class live or online course

DAY ONE : Chord Building A chord or accord in perfume is a term borrowed from music referring to constructing a synergy of notes that will be added to your perfume to create more complexity. In this day long workshop you will learn the notes and essences associated with eight fragrance families, how they relate to each other and how to make them more complex. These are the eight fragrance families we will focus on:
  • Green
  • Floral
  • Earth
  • Wood
  • Spice
  • Gourmand
  • Citrus
  • Fruit
By the end of the day you will have created a few chords that will be used on Day Two when we construct a perfume within a specific class.

DAY TWO : Perfume Types Perfumes are categorized into categories or types, which are also referred to as classes. This organizational system is based on the overall, universal scent impression. We will learn about these types, the notes that go into their formulation and construct one or more, depending on our time.
  • Chypre
  • Oriental
  • Fougère (meaning fern in French)
  • Floral
  • Green
  • Leather
All supplies & tools are included with the purchase of this class. Please bring a notebook for jotting down your formulas. By the end of the each day you will have gained new insights to add complexity to your botanical perfume formulas and knowledge to continue working with new skill sets.

Seating is limited, thus I recommend enrolling ASAP to grab your seat

Study, Learn, Evolve, Repeat

This Sunday, April 9th, I will be teaching what appears to be the very last Art of Botanical Perfume live class at the "current" perfumery. It won't be the last live class I teach, but my lease in the Whizin Market Hall is up on May 5th, thus it will likely be the last live class I do in this exact location...at least as of this sacred moment.

The online Art of Botanical Perfume course is available 24/7 and more live and online classes are on their way. What this also means, if you haven't put the pieces together yet, is that the perfumery as we know it in this incarnation will cease to exist. I won't say more at this point since things are in a fluid state, however, if you've been meaning to take a class or visit the space, tick tock.

The word alchemy is often associated with essential oils due to the transformation of physical matter through the process of distillation. Historical origins of alchemy point back in time suggesting that Hermes Trismegistus, which in Egypt was called Thoth was the father of the art.

Learn more about the different points of view on alchemy and its relationship to essential oils, aromatherapy, botanical perfume, psychology and altered states in this unique panel discussion.

April 21st, Friday 3pm-6pm

The process of obtaining the essence of a plant through the process of distillation goes back in History to the early alchemists in Egypt. In this afternoon workshop we will distill native plants personally selected and harvested with Cathy and Florian.

The word hydrosol, ‘hydro’ water and ‘sol’ solution means water solution and refers to the fact that a hydrosol is water that contains plant molecules and is produced alongside essential oil in the process of steam distillation, it is sometimes referred to as flower water.

With a small, portable, inexpensive, copper still, Hydrosols are easy to make, much safer and easier to use than essential oils and have great potential for use both in physical ailments and when working on a subtle, emotional level.

Mankind has distilled plants in order to extract their aromatic core for thousands of years and there is evidence that all the major civilizations used this form of extraction.

Making one’s own hydrosols and being a part of the process from the harvesting to the final product is not only easy with a small home still but also extremely revealing. The plant seems to open up on another level allowing us to come into contact with its healing vibration with ease and clarity, thus deepening our knowledge and intuitive information about it. There is a time for everything and although there are herbalists that have been distilling and using hydrosols regularly for years, I believe that now is the time to integrate their use into regular practice, they do not replace other forms of plant preparation but add a precious element to the medicinal plant tool box.

The one-day introduction to Hydrosols will include:

  • Practical distillations
  • Learning what constituents a hydrosol
  • How to use hydrosols

DATE and TIME: Friday, April 21st in Topanga Canyon, CA from 3pm - 6pm

LOCATION: Details provided upon registration.

Please arrive unscented. Be mindful of laundry, cosmetic and bath & beauty products on this special day. We need to keep our palettes clear and free of odorants and be respectful of the flora and fauna we will be working with.

with Cathy Skipper and Dr. Florian Birkmayer
April 24th, Monday evening 7pm - 9pm, Blue Table, Agoura Hills, CA

As part of the Alchemy & Medicine of the Soul weekend workshop we are offering an evening encounter with hydrosols, led by Cathy Skipper & Dr Florian Birkmayer MD.

During the distillation process plant matter gently imprints the water with its molecular trace particles resulting in an aromatic water that is useful in skin care, therapeutic applications, refreshing sprays and in cooking. Although these "waters of life" are part of daily life in our recent past, hydrosols are one of the lost arts that is now circling back and finding a home as a new form of aromatherapy. The waters that result from distillation have been described as “the soul of the plant”, able to transmit non-verbal messages, bypassing the thinking mind

In this informal gathering at Blue Table in Agoura Hills, we will explore the transformative subtle frequencies of several hydro distilled elixirs. Our focus will be the emotional and spiritual "properties found in the barely detectable aromatic trace molecules which exist in concentrations of parts per billion, bringing the worlds of matter and spirit."

"Drinking exotic plant hydrosols such as Jasmine Sambac, Blue Lotus, Golden Champa and Frankincense is an immersive experience which is exquisite, both in smell and taste. These plant teachers invite us to participate in a subtle, yet often euphoric, aromatic conversation with the natural wisdom of botanical intelligence."

Join us in this profound inquiry into the relationship between smell and higher consciousness — and feel it spark into your own work. Celebrate the extra-ordinary in the moment as you feel yourself elevated by botanical intelligence.

DATE & TIME: Monday, April 24, 2017, 7pm-9pm

LOCATION: Blue Table at  Whizin Market Hall, 28914 Roadside Dr, unit #219, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, find a map here.

Please arrive unscented. Be mindful of laundry, cosmetic and bath & beauty products on this special day. We need to keep our palettes clear and free of odorants.

“With an increased floral consciousness,
humans will begin to make full use of their ‘light brain’
and make more refined and sophisticated use of their ‘smell brain.’
The two are portentously linked.
In fact, they overlap to such an extent that they may be considered inseparable.”
~ Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume

Alchemy and Medicine of the Soul

Alchemy & the Medicine of the Soul
The Wounded Healer, A Journey Through the Alchemical Stages & the Sacred Union
A Workshop with Cathy Skipper & Dr Florian Birkmayer MD
Seats are limited sign up here

skill or song. Individual healing has a lot to do with finding this gift and using it
for the world’s sake, finding our song and singing it.”
~ Miriam Greenspan, Healing Through the Dark Emotions

I am delighted to host a spectacular series of events which includes a weekend workshop with two very heartfelt souls and leaders in the transformative power of aromatic plants, essential oils and hydrosols. Cathy Skipper and Dr Florian Birkmayer bring together a knowledge- and skill-set that encompasses French medical aromatherapy, holistic psychiatry, spiritual alchemy and intuitive plant communication.

The pleasure of meeting Florian and Cathy was akin to that feeling when we discover kindred souls, it took place at the first Beyond Aromatics conference in Seattle Washington, at the time Greg and I were rooming next to Florian and the two had not gotten together as a couple. At the conference, both Cathy and Florian presented topics that were perfectly paired for their profound approach to working with plants, essential oils and psychology—which would set the stage for this profound workshop. Florians approach has since evolved further by working closely with Cathy — whose own expertise as a herbalist, aromatic medicine practitioner and workshop leader is the product of decades of experience and study.

Cathy and Florian share their unique insight into the healing potency of essential oils by bringing to bear teachings distilled from spiritual alchemy, Jungian psychology, and their own unfolding healing journey... aromatically infused with plant wisdom from both the blue plateaus of Provence and the sagebrush deserts of New Mexico.

Florian will show how the Jungian understanding of alchemy is a revealing model for aromatic soul medicine, elucidated by his experience of using essential oils to treat people with post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues in his work as a psychiatrist. Cathy will draw from her long experience of French clinical aromatherapy, plant communication and kinesiology. Both Cathy and Florian have a personal and professional background in ‘healing the healer’ — a central theme of the workshop.

The workshop is suitable for aromatherapists, herbalists, bodyworkers and psychotherapists, and all those working in the healing arts wishing to deepen their relationship with aromatic plants as well as their own healing journey. Join us for a memorable weekend of learning, sharing and aromatic inner healing... but please don’t delay in booking your place, as numbers are limited!

COURSE COMPONENTS

• Distillation with Cooper Alembic of California Native Plant Flora.
• The seven alchemical stages and their relationship to distinct phases within the cycle of growth and healing.
• Identifying the different emotional/energetic states that arise within each alchemical stage and the essential oils that can help to transform them.
• Exercises and experiential work to deepen our understanding of each alchemical stage and the psycho-therapeutic actions of specific essential oils.
• Looking at ways this work can be used with clients in an aromatherapy or psychotherapy practice.

This workshop is intended to:

Help participants develop a deeper and more personal, intuitive relationship to aromatic plants and essential oils.
Offer participants a model of transformation that can be used to assist them on their own healing journeys and those of their friends, family and clients.
Highlight the importance of soul healing in achieving a state of inner harmony, vitality and optimum health.

Cathy Skipper
Workshop Co-Facilitator

English by birth, Cathy Skipper spent her adult life in rural France, where she farmed, trained and worked as a herbalist and aromatherapist, and taught practical herbalism, botany and aromatherapy at the L’Ecole Lyonnaise de Plantes Medicinales in Lyon. She participated for four years in an approach to energetic healing called Life Cell, under French Kinesiologist Caroline Gupta. Her medicinal plant education in France included a two-year course with Claude Lefebvre in Plant Communication. She emigrated from France in 2015 to live and work in New Mexico with her partner, Florian Birkmayer.

Cathy’s work involves building bridges between aromatic medicine and herbalism as well as recognizing the importance of healing the healer and reconnecting with nature. In her teaching she marries theory, practical work and energetics with the intention of helping students develop an intuitive relationship between themselves, the plant/essential oil and the patient, as a poweful impetus for healing.

Cathy’s work with Florian has a core vibration with the work of Carl Jung, the psyche, aromatic molecules, and the mind. She is co-author with Patrice de Bonneval of Aromatic Medicine.

For more info about Cathy follow this link to her blog and this post which delves deeper into this workshop we are presenting.

Dr Florian Birkmayer MD

Summer Essence Event and NEW pure fume!

Join me and the mastery of Jennifer Butler this Sunday, August 7th for an extraordinary community event revolving on the theme of the Summer essence.

SCENT
I will give a presentation and unveil my newest fragrance. The starting point was the essence of summer with melodies evoking the divine feminine. I’ve weaved fine threads of jasmine and other graceful florals with subtle hints of seashells and the constant rhythmic motion of ancient lunar tides reminding us of home. Diffused notes of a vintage Mysore sandalwood, oakmoss and orris in the base anchor the dreamy, artful nature of twilight with petals of crushed velvet. The mood is relaxed and elegant.

"Smell is a potent wizard
that transports you across thousands of miles
and all the years you have lived."
~ Helen Keller

The sense of smell has been critical to the survival of human beings. Early in our evolution, when we were on all fours, our smell sense was vital to our survival. As we became upright, olfaction was no longer the dominant system. We still depended on it for locating our food, mating, and hunting however the other sense systems began to play a much larger role.

Some interesting smell facts:
* The sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than any other sense.
* Every person experiences the same exact odor differently.
* We have a keener sense of smell later in our day.
* Woman have a more acute sense of smell than men. * Olfactory nerves can renew themselves. * Each of us has an individual odor thumb print.
* The right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for odor recognition.
* Smells fall into the following categories:
minty, floral, ethereal, musky, resinous, foul and acrid.

Smell Idioms:
To win by a nose.
The sweet smell of success.
I smell a rat.
Everything is coming up roses.
Smelling like a rose.
Nosy.
The nose knows.
Something smells fishy.
Wake up and smell the coffee!

The word for smell in Spanish and French is "sentir" which means to feel / to smell.

SIGHT

Experience the beauty of clothing and accessories from the comfort of a little piece of Europe in Beverly Hills

In the United States the sense we tend to rely on the most is our sense of sight. Of all the senses in our collective cultural sensorium, "vision" is used to assess and determine situations. Looking back in history it was the modern printing press, introduced in 1440 by the German Johann Gutenberg that began our shift into the "seeing is believing" paradigm. Over the next hundred years it was aided by several other inventions, primarily the microscope. Micro in latin meaning "small" and scope "to see". Philosophical ideas of the new era combined with the shift to a strong patriarchal system. All these factors working together in the shift to a culture primarily based on the sense of sight.

TOUCH

Feel the textures of luxurious fabrics, handmade textiles and learn which ones work best for you.

The sense of touch is the first and last one that we experience. It has the ability to distinguish between something soft, hard, smooth, wet, dry, etc. We experience this sense through receptors located on the skin, some areas being more sensitive than others. The skin is the largest organ of the body, like a sponge it is a porous membrane. In Aromatherapy the skin is one of the pathways we focus on when utilizing pure essential oils therapeutically.

TASTE

Savor a delicious meal in the company of a tribe of Summer essence individuals at Caffe Roma.

There are almost 10,000 taste buds located in our mouths, which can distinguish five different types of flavors: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and unami. We are all familiar with the tastes of sweet, salty, sour and bitter, but, what is unami? Unami receptors pick up the taste of glutanic acid salts such as MSG.
The sense of taste is the weakest of all our senses and depends in part on the sense of smell. Evident by when we have a cold, and can't taste our food.

HEAR

Jennifer will share her wisdom on the balance of inner and outer beauty while guiding us on what works best for the vibration of our unique essence.

Hearing, unlike the sense of smell, taste and vision, is a mechanical process. Hearing is based on movement, sounds produce a vibrational wave which is picked up by the ears.

SIXTH SENSE

What is the 6th Sense?.......RSVP to find out!

Art of Botanical Perfume Intensive January 17, 2016

The next Art of Botanical Perfume Intensive is set for January 17th at 10am. As of today we have a very eclectic group of gals attending which will make for an interesting class due to the diversity. I am also putting together a bunch of other classes and will be offering an hourly rate for consultations since that has become a big request.

In other related news, the camera disk that had all my photos from the NYC trip in October was chipped and thus I couldn't access the images until now. A post about that class will be appearing soon. Thanks for your patience.

The Student and the Teacher

In the mid eighties on the day of graduation from Otis in downtown Los Angeles, the head of the Communications Arts Dept. Sheila Levrant De Bretteville, invited me to return to Otis as a teacher. I've been teaching ever since!

This Sunday I will once again resume the mantle of teaching with the debut of my first formal class at the perfumery which opens the door to regular workshops and an upcoming online series. I started teaching aromatherapy classes in 1996 followed by natural perfume while continuing to teach illustration, eventually choosing to focus all my skill sets into aromatics.

At the moment there are two classes scheduled titled The Artistry of Botanical Perfume, Day Long Intensive, the first on Sunday followed by a second on August 23rd. Returning students will have the fortune to retake classes at a reduced rate. The intention is to have the online classes ready for early Autumn.

"It is the supreme art of the  teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
                                                                                                      ~ Albert Einstein

As experienced in the Beyond Aromatics presentation at Bastyr University last September, my approach to botanical perfume focuses on intuition and artistry. In order to reach supreme creativity and an individual, authentic way of expression a circular, right brain type of learning is needed. This is what I bring to the world of botanical perfume education.

More details coming soon. Right now I am in the thick of deciding which camera, lenses and mic, etc. to purchase.

I leave you with another image from my graduation day back in May of 1985 at MacArthur Park in downtown LA. This photo is of Ray Eames with her camera shooting Andrew as we all headed to a celebratory dinner. Both the opening image and this one were taken by Andrew Neuhart.

Scents contain mysteries and revelations. In both alchemical and mystical systems the elements are used as a simple structure for classification based on the sensory world mirroring that of human physical, emotional and psychological understanding. These elemental attributes of earth, air, fire and water can also be applied to scents. In this experiential ongoing class, Roxana will be your guide to explore a palette of high vibrational essential oils, what their elemental properties are and how to use them in our lives to facilitate greater understanding. Please come unscented - do not wear perfume or cologne - with paper and pencil to begin our journey into the ancient, richly woven tapestry of aromatic knowledge.  Class includes a handout and a 10% discount to use at the perfumery on the day of the event. This is an ongoing exploration.

THE STREET ART LIVE

THE TEMPLE of DELPHI
Date: Saturday, May 24th with Greg Spalenka
More details coming soon

The words, "Know Thyself" were chiseled into the stone of the ancient temple at Delphi but what do they really mean? Have you ever felt like a boat adrift at sea with no direction or focus, unclear about career goals or yearning for a deeper meaning to your existence?

Greg Spalenka will be your guide as you and the group dive into the temple of your hearts and open the doors to powerful wisdom that will help answer these questions, revealing the purpose of your life. In addition to accessing the clarity of who we are, you will learn how to create a symbol that represents this sacred part of ourselves. This workshop is for all who want to live an inspired and fulfilling life: Bring a pencil and paper and get ready for some transformation.

To deepen the experience Roxana will bring several essential oils with attributes assigned to each virtue to facilitate transformation and connection to the divine source within each of us.

Opening image: Pythia of the Oracle of Delphi by John Collier. If we constructed a scent for that first image we would use: one drop of choya for the smoke element and to bring in a bit of the sea and lightening; bay laurel; mitti attar for the earth; frankincense and sandalwood; for higher consciousness and some Greek and California white sage for purification. Want some? Attendees of this class will receive a free container.

Plant Dye Intensive Summary

The plant dye workshop that was originally scheduled for March 1st took place this past Sunday, on March 8th. Lucky for the teacher and attendees it was a fabulously sunny and beautiful day here in the Santa Monica Mountains which added a deeper shade of magic to the whole experience.

Mona, Greg and I arrived at the perfumery early to get things set up. The night before I prepared two things for the day, both based on lavender. The first was a whipped cream cheese and the second was a hand and body balm. For the whipped cream cheese I took one standard block of cream cheese and put it in the food processor with 1 tablespoon Hedcote lavender blossoms (from Ojai), a teaspoon dried Rosemary from our back lot and a few other random herbs that I can't remember...probably sage. I whipped all of together and then put into a glass container for the following morning.

The hand and body butter is something I've been making for a couple years. At some point soon, when I am convinced that it is a fabulous product, it will become available. If any of you fine readers would like a sample tossed into your next order please send me a note.

Back to the workshop...we set up two boiling pots and a large selection of plant material down the hallway next to the perfumery. Meanwhile, inside we set up the other items we would be using and snacks at the lavender colored table within the teaching area.

For our first project we had the option of choosing to dye fabric for a travel bag for our wool wrap or dye a silk scarf. I choose a rectangular silk scarf. The second project was a long wool shawl. Before the dying process Mona took us outside and explained the different colors that the plants might impart to our fabric. There are generalities with plants and colors, but as nature contains wild magick which cannot be tamed, sometimes the color varies. She had fun names for each of the different Eucalyptus leaves, like "Lost Hills" etc. which relates to an exact tree in an area.

We each selected a spot, spread out our fabric and began our compositions, in complete awareness of letting go to the intention of the plant divas. I choose to go for a water color type look for the scarf with colors from my palette, to achieve my desire I used plant materials that printed more in darker brown, umber and mauve hues. This included onion skins and an iron fleur de lis that would add some black.

Once we had all the plant material placed we rolled it all up and tied them with string. Greg's looked like a sushi hand roll, while mine was a super odd shape due to the fleur de lis iron. Once they were rolled and ready we through them into the pot. By the way, a nice benefit of using eucalyptus leaves and other botanicals is that it fills the space with the aromatic molecules, in this case Eucalyptus which made the day feel like we were at a spa.

While our first pieces cooked we each worked on the pocket for our wool shawl and or the travel bag. The pocket for my shawl was made of a few different fabrics including one little piece meant to hang to give it a boho type quality.

Next came the removal and unveiling of first eco printed items. When we pulled them out of the pot they were really hot and steaming, which was tricky when unrolling. Here is a photo of Teresa with hers and one of Monica, leaves and matter included. You will notice how one is more graphic and one more washes of color.

After lunch down at Blue Table we began pulling out our secondary bundles out of the pots. The unveiling of each persons piece was always exciting, producing lots of ou's and  awes.

Above is my wool shawl, freshly unrolled and below folded with pocket exposed.

I'm so grateful to have had Mona come and share her vast knowledge with each of us. It was such a wonder filled day that I wish for every one. Doing these types of activities connects us more deeply to nature and in doing so eases anxiety and increases our relationship with Gaia and other sentient beings on this planet that we share.

Next workshop with Mona will be "Color from the Kitchen" planned for April, details coming soon!
