Pretty in Pinks

Today I poured Lyra solid into an oval compact for a customer in South Africa which transported me into a "pink" mood. It also occurred to me that Lyra is a perfect in between season perfume, due to the balance of warm amber with sweet floral and licorice.

Here is a little assemblage of handmade and vintage beauties inspired by the pink hue of Lyra. Victorian & Edwardian

The Etsy featured seller this weekend has been the shop Vera Vague, is comprised of the dynamic duo Vera & Victor Vague, aka Anastasia and Eric, in Kalamazoo. Their focus is on the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco period items. I've been a long time fan of their shop and photos...mostly the Victorian boots or these Edwardian black leather "Witch" shoes from 1910.

As I was checking out the feature when all of a sudden I noticed that Anastasia was wearing our Victorian inspired perfume locket in the photo of them! I know its ours because about a month ago Eric bought it filled with Vespertina, obviously for Anastasia, what a perfect fragrance for her.

Besides the fabulous items they offer you gotta love their sense of style!

All photos except the Victorian inspired perfume locket belong the VeraVague.

The Deluge

The three day feature on the Etsy front page has brought in a deluge of orders. During that time frame I was averaging about seventy orders a day. I also received a bazillion messages, most of which were asking for help selecting a fragrance.

The downpour resulted in shifting a variety of aspects of the business immediately including bringing in some worker bees. My mom now comes every afternoon to print orders and create shipping labels for the new batch that is ready to be sent out. I also have My, who helped me out at the LA Artisan Fragrance Salon, coming by to help pack orders. While those two gals focus on their tasks I make as much perfume as my two little hands can manage.

Our living room has been converted into shipping & receiving. We brought in three long tables where we lay out orders and begin slowly putting each one together. Most are for solid perfume sample sets. Illuminating the world to the wonders of the value of nature and true, authentic natural perfume has reached new heights this week, I'm so happy to be part of that awareness.

I have ordered more materials across the board and will be updating some of the packaging. Most exciting is that now that I have funds, I can move forward on all those different projects that have been waiting on the tarmac, like little airplanes at a busy airport.

Orders are still coming in by the bucket loads, thus, for you who have been with me for years and tend to have me send you paypal invoices for orders, please be patient while things find a new equilibrium. Waiting at least a week or two would be a great help.

Featurerama

The silver shine of the waxing crescent moon reveals several features this week. (Did you ever notice that the word scent is in the word cresent?) The first is a review of Impromptu by Gaia over at The Non-Blonde blog. The second is an overview of my shop and perfumes that have captivated the heart of the poster ChatterBlossom over at her lovely blog.

And the third is the reason I had Rebecca come to my studio and take photos....today I am the Featured Seller on Etsy!!

Enjoy and many thanks to those who have chosen to write such eloquent words about my work and felt that it was worth a special feature.

Gift Guide: Shabby Chic, Pink and the Vamp

Here's a few beauties I found on Etsy weaved in with some of my pieces. The first collection is for the romantic, lover of shabby chic and vintage style.

Bed from Painted Cottage in New Jersey
Vintage Crochet Bedspread - Coverlet from Ethanol in Portland Oregon
Large Coral Branch from EveryEskimo in Michigan
and the Page 47 mini compact from my shop.

I choose Page 47 natural solid perfume because it is a soft and feminine floral vanilla fragrance.

This second collection is along the same lines but pink with a touch of the Girly Girl.

White Chocolate Raspberry Macarons
from The Whimsical Spoon in Charlotte, North Carolina
Pink Moon 8x12 Print by MKendall Photography in Atlanta, Georgia
Ballerina Series Blush Tank by ClaireLa Faye in Portland, Oregon
and Lyra solid perfume compact from my shop.

For her I chose the sweet, floral oriental profile of Lyra in her pretty pink crochet pouch.

Off in a completely different tangent we enter the world of the red, hot diva who likes sophistication and bling.

Set of 3 Holiday, Soy Wax Candles by Accessory Closet in Cleveland, Ohio
Red Rose Cocktail Hat w/ Black Netting by Sai Sai Arts in Nashville, Tennessee
Vintage Red Ruffle Stilettos by CaptainCat in Portland, Oregon
and Vespertina liquid botanical perfume from my shop.

I chose Vespertina liquid for this vamp who likes rose and jasmine in her perfume with a bit of mystery. The melding of floral, incense and botanical musk seemed right up her alley.

The Long and Winding Road

Over at the Etsy Artisan Gallery Team blog members have been pairing up to feature interviews on each other. Jen of Polestar and I decided to pair up as interview buddies. I invite you to head over to our team blog where you can gather even more insights about my long and winding path into the fragrant world of botanical perfume.

Enjoy!

The jasmine sambac plants continue to over up their splendid little flowers, the tincture is getting stronger with each summer day.

Gathering Blue

Sometimes when I sit to write a post for the blog I find myself in a chaos of inspired imagery leading me from one thing to another in a frenzied state. I usually can tell from the energy of it that there will be an interesting intersection transpiring at some point. All I need to do is faithfully follow it, even if the end does not reveal itself immediately.

Such was the case yesterday morning, just after returning from taking Eve over to the Theatricum Botanicum for her first performance of Much Ado About Nothing. I checked in at Etsy to see what was happening with sales at my shop and was mesmerized by a beautiful photo. The image, by artisan Lisa Jordan, was of a cluster of felted acorns on wood with an autumn leaf (pictured above). I hearted the photo and began to build an Etsy treasury inspired by the image titled A Rich Patina for Autumn.

As is the case when I make treasuries I contact the featured individuals to alert them that they are in the treasury. I then went about the very busy day with the intention to photograph Q solid perfume in a way that captured some of the feel of Lisa Jordan's felted acorn image. I went outside in the late afternoon looking for a piece of wood to bring into the house for the shoot. Instead I found a log that I was using in the garden as a design element amongst the native plants. Since the bottom of the log was covered with dirt, spiders and leaves I choose to do the photo shoot outside. Here are the results...

Today, while editing the above photos, I received back a thank you message from Lisa. I clicked on her shop buttom within the convo and decided to send her the new photo of Q solid natural perfume that she inspired. We got into a little message exchange which led me to her lil fish blog and opened the duirway to Ms. Jordan's vibrant artistic life. Upon seeing her post on a natural dye bath with mushroom and lobster I immediately knew I had met a kindred spirit, in fact her dye baths look like my tinctures and infusion! Reading about her process made me think of one of my favorite novels Gathering Blue, which spiraled down another worm hole.

This bridge led me to discover that Lois Lowry, the author of Gathering Blue, has a blog and that she was inspired by my compatriot Jorge Luis Borges when she wrote The Giver.

So much beauty and interweaving creative paths...like the richly colored robe that Kira finds herself restoring in Gathering Blue.

BEE up: My turn

“To be or not to be isn't the question. The question is how to prolong being.”
~ Tom Robbins

Aligned with inspired artists from all over the world today's post is one of a whole. Begun on June 24th, arm and arm with the Holistic Beekeeping post on the Etsy Storque, a Blog it Forward: BEE up was birthed. My esteemed Etsy Artisan Gallery Team members are celebrating the honey bee by bee-ing part of this chain of posts. The festivities also include handmade marvels and Etsy treasuries.

Round and round we go, the earth spinning in the middle of the universe, while we humans attempt to learn the mysteries of life. Generation after generation, comes and goes and yet it seems that very little wisdom from the plant kingdom is honored. One such example is that of the plight of the little European honeybee.

I just read recently in the UK Telegraph that in 1910, Britain had a million bee hives; today that figure is 250,000. In 100 years while, the human population explodes, we have a loss of 75% of our main pollinators. I'm sure this is good news to big corporations like Monsanto who want to control the worlds food supply. In the meantime, a few conscious humans are choosing to affect the pattern. Like Galadrial states in Lord of the Rings "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

Like many of my Artisan Gallery team mates I too created a special item for this event, albeit I've run into a little snag in having it ready for today. I'm working on an edition of prints based on the bee image I did back in August for the Bee Here Now blogging event.

The bee image began first as an acrylic painting on gessoed board done in the same process as my illustration work. Once the painting was finished I scanned it and began to add layers in photoshop. The new image was recreated from scratch beginning with the original scanned image. This time, conscious that these would be high resolution prints, the image was created much larger. I also changed the parchment paper layer and Victorian embellishments.

The challenge with having it ready today is that our Epson printer has decided it does not like to print on the real fine Arches water color paper I purchased for this project. Since today is a national holiday, heading out to buy some high grade Epson paper is regrettably not an option. Sigh...thus we will have to wait until Tuesday for the edition of prints.

In the meantime I invite you to enjoy the sweet nectar my fellow teamies have crafted for you from their own hands. Yesterdays Blog it Forward Bee Up was by Estella on her Star of the East blog, tomorrows will be by fellow compatriot Irene of Aroluna posting from her blog.

Images
The opening collaged image began with an antique type case and three wood characters, from there I added some of my team mates items:
1. Tiny honey bee necklace in silver by Lulu Bug Jewelry in Santa Rosa, California
2. 2 Bees tiny tray stoneware pottery by One Clay Bead in Ashville, North Carolina
3. Baby Hare Polliner Soft Sculpture by Dragon House of Yuen in Edinburgh, Scotland
4. Madeira Citrine Sterling Hammered Earrings by Stein-Schmuck Design in Basel, Switzerland
5. Old Art Engraving of Antique Entomology by Slinkymalinkicat Latvia
6. Handmade Fabric Wasp/Bee Brooch by Blue Terracotta in Lyon, France
7. Your Childs Artwork Brooch by Betsy Bensen in Portland, Oregon
8. Honey Bee Ring by KathiRoussel in Buffalo, New York

Many thanks to the Artisan Gallery Team for their support, I am humbled by their contributions and generous spirits.

Artist Feature and Giveaway: Greg Spalenka

Welcome to the 1st Etsy Artist Feature and Giveaway of the year 2010! The talented and heart felt visual artist Greg Spalenka graces us with his glorious, inspiring imagery. Greg is the visual artist behind the Etsy shop Spalenka.

Maestro Gregorio, as we have refer to him at this journal, graduated from Art Center College of Design in 1982. Shortly there after he moved to New York City to launch his impressive career as one of the leading conceptual illustrators of the era. Throughout his extensive career illustrating for such publications as Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and the NFL. he has garnered numerous awards. Displayed at his studio in Los Angeles are gold and silver medals from the New York and LA Society of Illustrators as well as the Spectrum Annual of Fantastic Art. The scope of his artistic life also includes conceptual art for films such as the academy award winning, “The Golden Compass” and the upcoming third Narnia film, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

Last year Greg opened two shops at Etsy, one for his elder illustration work which included his journalistic work with Mike Tyson and the Spalenka shop featuring "Fantasy and Visual Art from the Mind's Eye." The image that originally drew me to his work, even after being aware of his name in illustration circles, is Blessings. The original painting Blessings was created for a festival created by San Francisco organization called Open Hand.

Greg's work embodies elements of the old masters with his a devotion to the figure. The expertise as a draftsman and painter is highlighted by his use of collage, tape, texture and wild abandonment. See more of his technique at this and this Bouquet link on his website.

Lately Greg has been manifesting more than just beautiful imagery for print and film. He has decided to be of service to the larger community of artists with empowering workshops. Greg refers to ArtistAsBrand™ as an "Indie Art Revolution" with a lofty goal of creating empowered, self sufficient artist entrepreneurs.

I asked Greg a few questions so that you'll could get to know him a bit more. He was in the car driving to Laguna Beach to teach ArtistAsBrand™ as I asked him these questions via the phone.

1.) What is the one thing you find most inspiring to feed your creative spirit?

My goal is to channel the essence of the divine through my work and live in the art spirit.

2.) What is your favorite scent from the natural world?

Carnation absolute, essential oil of Ylang Ylang and Spice.

3.) If you were King of a village what would you wish for your kingdom?

The first thing that comes to mind is peace and prosperity.....and divine creativity,

4.) How did you find yourself making and teaching art?

For as long as I remember I have always had an interior cathedral in my head, a sacred space of infinite imagination. I am grateful to have had success as an illustrator and now empower others with what I have learned in the span of my career.

5) Tell us a secret?

Hmmm, a secret...hmmm...I'd like to receive an academy award!

Thank you Greg, it is an enormous delight to share your beautiful imagery with the readers of this journal. We will all be visualizing you receiving an academy award, can't wait! Get to know Greg a bit more and tap into his interior cathedral by visiting his art website and his new blog.

Artist Feature and Giveaway: Get Ready Set Go

On this 17th day of December we are off to visit the inspired world of fellow artist Rachel born in Detroit. Rachel is the artisan behind the super successful Etsy shop Get Ready Set Go, your place to find upcycled luggage enhanced with her designs.

Rachel is a pretty brunette that lives and works on the East coast of Florida with a penchant for all things creative, including knitting and photography. You will find her on Etsy with two other shops. One which features Vintage clutches, Get Ready Set Clutch and the other Around N Brightly Wound with her handknit goodies and vintage lucite jewelry.

I first became aware of Get Ready Set Go through building treasuries on Etsy. A fun creative outlet that is tremendous for building community on the worlds largest venue for handmade. Rachels fun and well shot photos of her pieces make them perfect for us treasury builders.

I'm really attracted to how Rachel melds her creativity with ecology to create these little beauties that are ever so functional and utilitarian. There's a color and style for everyone AND she has been known to do custom work as well.

Rachel was very kind to take a moment out of her very busy schedule to answer a few questions for all of us so that we could get to know her a bit more.

1.) What is the one thing you find most inspiring to feed your creative spirit?

picking just one thing that inspires me is impossible but i will have to go with music. it's my drive, it makes me tick, it helps me to feel, it carries me through.

2.) What is your favorite scent from the natural world?

black currant, sandalwood, blackberry...the woods- pine trees in the winter to be exact. i grew up in michigan and i miss the trees there like no other! fresh fallen snow and a deep inhalation of pine makes my mouth water......

3.) If you were Queen of a village what would you wish for your kingdom?

for my kingdom i would wish for all children to have the love of a parent- blood or not- unconditional! that every child would grow up with someone who believes in their dreams and supports them in ALL that they aspire to do and be. that they would have someone to talk to, be open with and not feel judged by- even when their thoughts may not seem right. everyone needs to have that intensely passionate love standing behind them when they fall. because we all fall.

4.) How did you find yourself using vintage luggage as a canvas?

good question. hmmmm, i think it was when i found a piece of luggage that i couldn't get clean enough. it just looked so blah after i used all of my tricks of the trade to make it look better. i was bound and determined to kick it up a notch! i did, and from that point on the gates flew open:)

5) Tell us a secret?

this is hard because i am a really open person. i've been told that i don't just wear my heart on my sleeve but rather i wear my guts all over the place. sorry for that image but i think it's a pretty perfect visual for it. so a secret...... here's what i got: i dream all too often of being featured seller on etsy and when i do my biggest fear is naming my favorite musical artists- there are just too many good musicians. i seriously start to freak ot when i think about it for too long.

Thank you dear Rachel, it's a treat to have you here and share a bit about yourself with me and the readers of this journal.  Get to know Rachel a bit more and tap into her creative mind by visitng her  blog.

The Circle: Chranukah

More and more luminous each day our little holiday tree grows. The light on this 17th day of Advent is provided by fellow artist and Etsy seller Lee of One Clay Bead. Like an aromatic synergy each of us adds our own voice to this round robin and the fabric of life. It is a great honor to host each of these luminous beings here at this journal. Please head on over, red rover, to The Beauty you Love blog. Lee shares a fun story featuring her kitty Loca in the leading role of her families blended Christmas/Chanukah tradition.

The Circle: My Favorite Gingerbread Cookies

Ah, it's Friday, the day attributed to the planet Venus. Last night I attended the High School orchestra performance at Highland Hall Waldorf School. My daughter Eve plays the flute and this year she also sung back up for the Brazilian samba piece titled Mas Que Nada by Jorge Ben.

As I witnessed the amazing performance of a very tight and cohesive set of young musicians, I had a thought. This blogging event is much like all those different instruments in the orchestra, or even different types of music: Jazz, Polka, Oriental, Classical, etc. Each voice adds their very own special imprint to our song.

Samba music is happy music, it makes you want to get up and dance. Nicole of Lillyella, our featured contributor today, is a bit like the sunshine one finds in Samba music. Thus on this day attributed to love, Nicole adds another little light to our tree and shares with us the aromas of crafting and a recipe which contains the scent of Christmas for her.

So, get those outrageous costumes on and your voice ready as we Samba our way over to a very luminous soul who I admire greatly and has taught me quite a bit.
